PROGRAM NOTES

My composition, Waltz No. 5 in F Minor, is heavily inspired by Chopin’s music. Particularly, Chopin’s use of dynamics and expression throughout his music influenced my thought processes as I developed this piece. Further, as I listen to and study Chopin’s works, I envision colors in my mind as each piece unravels and enraptures. The colors represent varying parts of the pieces in a similar way to those that I envision in my mind as I composed my music. My piece is a nostalgic reminiscing, where life, as it continues, carries memories, creates new ones, and is reflective upon the past. Similarly, as differing parts of the piece repeat, so too, do our memories, enabling us to remember wonderful parts of our lives. This piece represents a realization that our memories are fleeting and that we can only move in one direction, forward, as reflected at the end of the piece.
