PROGRAM NOTES

I. Nezawe

The title “Nezawe” refers to “Neziwe”, the Zulu female name for trustworthy, honest, and reliable. The title also refers to a former composition instructor of mine, spelled backwards. This composer loves and specializes in writing for brass instruments. He reflects the character that this name represents, and the music has a proud and joyful quality.

 

II. Klangfarben Fanfare

“Klangfarben” is a term used to describe tone color and timbral contrasts.

 

III. A Swollen, Chromatic Chorale

“Swollen Chorale” is a stretched and distorted version of a four-voice chorale, pulled out of time and to its limits.

 

IV. Finale

A chaotic summary of all the movements!
