Ethan Resnik: Princeton University Portfolio
I have a strong synesthetic association between color and sound, which makes listening to music a highly visual experience for me. In this audiovisual work, there are particular sonic events, which trigger flashes of specific colors. The work represents my relationship between color and sound, and the lights clarify the musical gestures, shapes, and recurring sonic events, creating an immersive experience.
In a similar way, variations of the same sound, such as pitch classes within different octaves or ranges, trigger the same color, in varying brightnesses and timbres.
My personal color associations with pitch include the following:
G = green (light)
A-flat - dark red
A = red
B-flat = brown-yellow
B = yellow
C = blue
C# = blue
D = green (darker)
E-flat = brown-orange
E = orange
F = yellow
F# = yellow
*In the case of enharmonics, my brain will arbitrarily choose one key area and assign that color.
