PROGRAM NOTES

Environmental Diffusion is a work that represents a living ecosystem, blending outdoor sonorities from the natural world. Throughout the piece, these sounds interact with field recordings that I created while exploring various natural settings, including my local hometown of Bedford, New York, as well as nature preserves in the Eastern United States. In a way, various environments are fused into one another.

“Environmental Diffusion” has multiple meanings. It reflects environmental awareness and refers to a spread of pollution, as instruments represent a wasteland of what once was: a broken-down, expired, and extinct version of the previous environment. However, it also means a blend of the natural environment with surrounding technological and industrial development. In other words, the music diffuses technology with the environment, highlighting that at times, they can coexist, while at other times they cannot.
